We are thrilled to welcome Nick Witan as a speaker at the Learning Disability Leaders Conference 2026, where he will discuss PBS and the impact on quality of life.
Nick Witan will be presenting on:
Quality of Life and Effective Implementation of PBS: Our moral obligations to the people we support
From Support Worker to sector advocate
Nick began his career in health and social care over 15 years ago as a Support Worker and has since progressed to Operations Manager. It is a journey that has given him a real, grounded perspective on what good support looks like from every level of an organisation.
Most of his experience has been in services supporting people with learning disabilities, autism, and individuals who may find it difficult to communicate their needs. He has worked across supported living, residential, forensic and complex care settings, which means he understands both the challenges and the possibilities within each.
Throughout that career, Nick has held onto one conviction: the sector must keep evolving. Meeting people’s basic needs is not the ceiling; it is the floor.
A passionate advocate for PBS
Nick is a strong believer in Positive Behaviour Support, and not just in theory. He has seen first-hand what happens when PBS is embedded meaningfully across an organisation and used with real intention. People’s quality of life improves. The support around them becomes something they can genuinely rely on.
For Nick, PBS reinforces a simple truth: every person deserves the opportunity to live a life filled with dignity, joy and genuine quality. Organisations working in LD services have a responsibility to make that possible.
The Just Care Campaign
In early 2026, Nick founded the Just Care Campaign to challenge a pattern he had seen too often in the sector: services that provide ‘just care’, meeting only the most basic human needs, and stopping there.
The campaign’s message is clear. As a sector, we must aim higher, expect more, and hold ourselves to a standard of support that enables people not just to live, but to thrive.
The Just Care Podcast
In May 2026, Nick launched the Just Care Podcast, bringing together guests with lived experience and professionals from across health and social care to explore what quality of life truly means.
Each episode looks at what makes a ‘good day’ for the people we support, and what gets in the way of that. It is an honest, human look at a question the sector needs to keep asking.
What to expect from Nick’s session
Nick’s session will explore the link between meaningful PBS implementation and genuine quality of life, and why, as a sector, we have a moral obligation to get this right.
Whether you are a registered manager, a senior leader, or someone working directly in LD services, this is a session that will challenge and inspire in equal measure.
